Replacing the outdated street furniture will make a decisive contribution to improving accessibility and quality of life. The core of the project is the replacement of benches and garbage cans in the centers of Salzgitter-Bad and Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.
"Increasing and maintaining the attractiveness of our city centers is one of my most important concerns. At present, the street furniture in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad consists of different models of different ages. This creates a lack of harmony and inconsistency. In order to increase the attractiveness of the public squares, the gray lattice benches and the associated garbage cans in particular are now being replaced by uniform, visually appealing models," explains Mayor Frank Klingebiel.
"The people of Salzgitter will not only benefit from the visual enhancement of the furniture, but also from the improved functionality: to make it easier for people with limited mobility to stand up and sit down, the benches and round benches will be equipped with armrests in future," adds Jan Erik Bohling, Managing Director of WIS.
The newly procured street furniture is visually based on the models that have already been used in the two climate-friendly forums - a combination of wood and gray steel elements that rely on sustainable materials, a timeless design and durability.
Installation of the furniture has already begun in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and is scheduled for completion in spring 2026. The new acquisition was made possible by the city of Salzgitter's participation in the "Sustainable inner cities and centers" funding program of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, which supports municipalities in the sustainable design and revitalization of their inner cities. The total cost of the new street furniture is around 146,000 euros, 90 percent of which is covered by funding. The project was planned and implemented by WIS in collaboration with the SRB municipal management company.
