Salzgitter

Register now for the Easter bonfire

Once again this year, numerous traditional bonfires, so-called Easter bonfires, will light up the evening sky in keeping with tradition. Some important regulations must be observed:

Easter bonfires must be registered with the Environment Department of the City of Salzgitter.

Fires that are held by organizations or associations as part of a public event, are accessible to everyone and serve to promote customs are recognized as traditional fires.

Only tree and shrub cuttings or untreated wood up to a volume of 150 cubic meters may be burned.

The collection and storage of the burning material must begin no earlier than seven days before burning. As smaller animals like to seek shelter in the dense branches of the piled-up plant cuttings, these should be shifted on the day of burning so that they have the opportunity to escape and do not perish miserably in the fire.

An additional recommendation is to store the firewood at a height of no more than 50 centimeters. This makes the collected wood unattractive for building nests.

This year, Easter will take place during the breeding and setting season, which has probably already begun.

This makes it particularly important:

  • Before shifting, carefully check that there are no nests with clutches or broods in the pile of burning material.
  • If nests are discovered, they must not be destroyed, damaged or impaired. The affected material must remain on site and must not be burned until the end of the breeding season.
  • People and neighboring properties must not be endangered by smoke and flying sparks.
  • The fire must be completely extinguished within a few hours (usually from dusk to midnight) and must be kept under constant supervision; a fire safety guard must be provided.
Fire and embers must be extinguished when leaving the fireplace.
  • The combustion residues and sorted waste must be properly recycled or disposed of within one week.
  • Burning is prohibited in strong winds (significant movement of branches with strong arms) and during prolonged dry spells.
  • As a precautionary measure, it is also pointed out that the organizers are responsible for proper compliance with the regulations and that they must reimburse the costs incurred if deficiencies are found during the inspections of the regulations to be complied with.

Important2: Any previously unregistered Easter bonfire must be registered immediately in writing with the City of Salzgitter's Environment Department (e-mail: umweltstadt.salzgitterde. Questions can also be answered by telephone on 05341/839-4098.
