The city archive opens its doors on the occasion of the nationwide Day of Archives: guests can get to know the city archive with its history, functions and research opportunities. At various stations, they can gain an insight into the archive's exciting holdings.
The photo hands-on games "Old home - new home" are just as illustrative: the team from the city archive has found old photos from the city districts, which are compared with current photos. Guests are invited to guess whether they recognize the respective sections.
In the game "When was what in Salzgitter", knowledge of local history can be tested. Will guests be able to identify certain events in the town's history using contemporary images from the archive's photo collection and (if necessary) additional tips?
The volunteer Ortsheimatpfleger will present their work on this day. The volunteers are the "collective memory of the city" because they preserve knowledge from the city districts and pass it on in a variety of ways.
Anyone who would like to research their own family can get tips and help from the city archives. Visitors can find out how to get started with their own family research and what documents are kept in the city archive. The city archive team has prepared original sources for visitors to browse through and will be happy to explain what is important.
Fans of old books can look forward to many treasures. Remaining copies of works published by the city archive in the past decades will be on offer: So books on local history and the Ortsheimatpfleger booklets published to date.
A warm welcome!

The city archive is the historical memory of the city and its administration. It fulfills the public task of evaluating the city's written records, taking over archival material, securing it permanently, making it accessible and making it available to all interested citizens. In addition to these core archival tasks, the research and communication of the city's history are further focal points.
The city archive is also the contact point for the Ortsheimatpfleger (Ortsheimatpflege) of the city of Salzgitter, who were first appointed in 1987.
The tasks of the volunteers are many and varied. Last year, for example, the Ortsheimatpfleger contributed to the Braunschweigische Landschaft's traveling exhibition on the post-war period.
In addition, an information board on the flax caves in Lobmachtersen was inaugurated. Lectures, tours and site visits also took place.
