Apply for a change of address in the electronic proof of identity

The electronic proof of identity is the online ID function of your ID card, your electronic residence permit or your eID card for EU citizens. You can use it to identify yourself securely when dealing with the authorities or using online services.

If your place of residence changes, you must also update the address in the chip of your ID document.

ID card with online ID function and the eID card:

Online:
If your new municipality offers electronic residence registration, you can also change your address online as part of this registration process.

A personal visit is then not necessary.

An address sticker with your new address for the ID card or eID card will be sent to you by post.

In person:
If you would like to re-register in person or if online registration is not possible at your new place of residence, please contact the Citizens' Registration Office.

The address is usually updated directly in the chip of your ID document when you register your place of residence.

Electronic residence permit (eAT):

Only in person:
The address in your electronic residence permit (eAT) can only be changed in person at the relevant immigration office.

An online change is not possible for the eAT.

Please bring your registration confirmation with you to the appointment - it serves as proof of your new address.

What documents are required?

  • Your ID card is valid.
  • You have activated the online function of your ID card.
  • You have a current registration confirmation and the landlord's confirmation of residence as proof of your change of address.

When registering your place of residence online, you will also need

  • an NFC-enabled smartphone or a USB card reader
  • the ID card app installed on your smartphone

Who should I contact?

The Citizens' Registration Office at the new place of residence is responsible for updating the ID card with online ID function and the eID card - if supported, also possible digitally.

The foreigners authority at the new place of residence is responsible for updating the electronic residence permit (eAT).

Prerequisites

You have a valid identity card, an electronic residence permit (eAT) or an eID card for EU citizens.

You have changed your place of residence, successfully re-registered and are in possession of a current confirmation of registration.

Procedure

Procedure for personal visits:

As soon as you have re-registered in person at the Citizens' Registration Office, the data on your ID card or eID card will be updated on site.

If you have an ID card with online ID function or an eID card and if the municipality of your new place of residence offers this, you can update your address online.
