Short-term fee increase for ID cards

On January 30, 2026, the Federal Council passed a new ordinance to relieve the Federal Police and the administration in the passport and ID card system. Among other things, this ordinance changes the prices for ID card applications.

According to a written communication from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the plan is to enter into force on February 7, 2026, so that the following fees will apply in the future:

  • EUR 46.00 for applicants aged 24 and over
  • EUR 27.60 for applicants under 24 years of age

The reason for the adjustment is increased costs in the production of ID cards and in the administrative procedures of the ID card authorities. The new fees apply to all applications submitted from the above date.

Please note: Citizens who apply for an ID card at the BürgerCenter on Monday must already pay the new fees. ID cards that have already been applied for are not affected by the increase.
