At the invitation of Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, a 240-page publication entitled "Focus on the Family" was presented to more than 300 guests from all areas of public life to take stock of Salzgitter as a child and family-friendly learning city.
Klingebiel and the city's children's commissioner, Sylvia Fiedler, believe that this survey confirms their conviction that "Salzgitter already has a lot to offer children and families." However, it is now a matter of evaluating and updating the basic data collected in themed working groups. After all, Salzgitter should continue to develop and become a sought-after place to live.
The publication serves as a source of information and guidance for the population. Beginning with greetings from the Lord Mayor and the Children's Commissioner, the brochure is divided into 13 sections: Salzgitter at a glance, Education, Culture, Integration, Housing and infrastructure, Sport and leisure, Health, Old and active, Safety, Business and trades, Institutions - initiatives - churches, Council decisions. Finally, there is a conclusion and outlook.
With this stocktaking, Mayor Klingebiel launches the initiative "Promoting children and supporting families", which is geared towards the strategic goal of making Salzgitter one of the most child and family-friendly cities in Germany by 2015. This will be made visible to the outside world with the city's newly developed logo, which will shape its visual appearance in future as part of a broad-based city marketing concept.
With the backing of Salzgitter's politicians, population, clubs, associations and organizations as well as the business community, the Mayor of Salzgitter and the city council have already achieved a great deal before today. The first major steps were taken with the appointment of the first full-time children's commissioner in Lower Saxony, free childcare for parents for all three kindergarten years and a comprehensive school renovation concept. The new trend-setting youth and sports promotion scheme and the launch of the BONA SZ project (vocational orientation and securing young talent for industrial, technical and scientific professions) have also already been implemented.
