Out of 68 projects from 45 cities, Michael Osann, Head of the Education Department, representing Salzgitter, received a certificate of recognition in the "Mobility and Road Safety" category for the redesigned Spitzweg Passage on Fredenberg.
The presentation of the first European "Excellence City for Children" award was the highlight of the conference, which focused on the theme of "Equal opportunities through education". The main winners were Malmö, Darmstadt, Liverpool and Munich for particularly innovative projects in the area of child-friendliness, but eight other cities were also honored, including Zurich, Gothenburg, Odense, Karlsruhe, Satu Mare in Romania, Elblag in Poland, Peristeri in Greece and Salzgitter.
The "Cities for Children" network and Stuttgart, together with the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, offered the prize for cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. In addition to prize money, the winners received non-material values in the form of a stainless steel sculpture showing people of different age groups holding hands in a circle.
