Salzgitter

New construction of the technical center

The city center of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt will have a new look. From spring 2010, E.ON Avacon will begin construction of its new technical center behind the town hall.

In Helmstedt on Tuesday, December 8, the jury of the architectural competition organized by E.ON Avacon selected the winning designs. First prize went to the planning office BOF Architekten from Hamburg.

"The building will be home to 200 highly qualified employees," said Mayor Frank Klingebiel and Chief Technology Officer Matthias Herzog, both delighted with the decision.

Klingebiel called the new E.ON Avacon building an architectural enhancement of the Lebenstedt city center. He also referred to the positive effects for the economy and the job market in Salzgitter, which will come about when the employees of the technology headquarters, who are currently still based in Braunschweig, move into their new offices in Lebenstedt.

Herzog explained that the new administration building is designed in such a way that the office space required by the city can also be offered for rent in a central location. The building is being constructed to the west of the town hall on the site at Joachim-Campe-Straße 14, where the health department is currently located. This building, which is no longer up to date, will be demolished. The purchase agreement for the approximately 9,000 square meter property was signed by the city and E.ON Avacon a few weeks ago.

On Wednesday, December 9, representatives of E.ON Avacon promptly reported on the current decision at the meeting of the building committee of the city of Salzgitter and presented the award-winning designs.

The eleven-member jury, headed by architecture professor Berthold Penkhues from the Technical University of Braunschweig, included other architects, Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the head of the building law department, Bernd Waldmann, and representatives of the energy service provider. Eight architectural firms took part in the competition.

The competition was coordinated by Günter Hertel, Head of the Institute for Architectural Psychology, Helmstedt. The aim of the competition was to find the best design for the new building and to select an architect as the contractor for the entire planning services. The winning design will be exhibited in the atrium of the town hall from February 8 to March 3, 2010.
