Monument protection serves to preserve historical buildings that are particularly worthy of protection - whether half-timbered houses or buildings from more recent construction periods - there are monuments from almost all eras.

The monuments are worthy of protection due to their historical, architectural or urban significance and should therefore be preserved for the public. For this reason, the relevant objects are registered by the Lower Saxony State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as architectural, soil and natural monuments.

The aim of the Lower Monument Protection Authority, in cooperation with the owner of the monument, is to safeguard these treasures for the future. The legal basis for monument protection in Lower Saxony is the Lower Saxony Monument Protection Act (NDSchG) of May 30, 1978 (in the currently valid version). Cultural monuments are protected; according to the law, these are architectural monuments, ground monuments and movable monuments. The guiding principle here is: "Cultural monuments are to be protected, maintained and scientifically researched. They should be made accessible to the public as far as reasonably possible."
