Formal proof of German citizenship is provided by a citizenship card. This identity card is required for certain legal transactions or legal relationships (e.g. adoption, appointment to the civil service).

Requirements:
Before issuing a certificate of citizenship or a certificate of legal status as a German, the citizenship authority must check

• whether and how you acquired German citizenship / legal status as a German,
• whether and how you lost your German citizenship / legal status as a German.

In addition to your personal details, information is also required on the persons from whom you derive your nationality. You can find out who these persons are on the application form.
