The residence permit for research purposes for mobile researchers is a temporary residence permit. You may apply to extend your residence permit if your work at a research institution is to continue beyond the validity period of your residence permit.

Apply for an extension of your residence permit no later than eight weeks before it expires at the immigration office responsible for your place of residence.

The same requirements apply to the extension of a residence permit for research purposes as to its initial issuance. In particular, you must be able to present a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution.

If your residence permit is extended, it will once again be issued for a limited period. The residence permit for research purposes is extended for the duration of the research project. However, your stay in Germany may not exceed one year in total.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this possibility was already ruled out at the time of issuance or the most recent extension of the residence permit.

• Admission agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution for the purpose of conducting the research project.
• Rental agreement
• Proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses (including 3 proofs of income from the last 3 months)
• Proof of health insurance

Extension of a residence permit for research purposes for mobile researchers:

• for an additional stay of up to three months: EUR 96
• for an additional stay of more than three months: EUR 93

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or exemption may be granted.
