Help with blindness

Civilian blind people are entitled to assistance for the blind in accordance with the German Social Security Code - Twelfth Book.

This benefit is granted depending on the income and assets of the blind person.

In addition, in Lower Saxony, a state allowance for the blind is granted on application (see form service). Like the assistance for the blind, it is intended to compensate for the additional expenses caused by blindness. This benefit is granted irrespective of income and assets. As a similar benefit, the state allowance for the blind is offset against the assistance for the blind.

Care insurance benefits are partially offset against the state allowance for the blind and assistance for the blind.

For both benefits, blindness must be proven by the "Bl" mark on the severely disabled person's pass issued by the Lower Saxony State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Family - the relevant branch office for the place of residence - (formerly the pension office). Applications for the "Bl" mark can be obtained in Salzgitter at the Citizens' Centers in Salzgitter-Bad and Salzgitter-Lebenstedt or on the Internet at the addresses below.
