Bertrand has the feeling that he has missed out on life. No wife, boring job, no ambitions. He wants that to stop.

After an unsuccessful attempt to die in a car accident, Bertrand wants to jump out of the window. But this plan also fails because someone suddenly knocks on the door of the 38-year-old's apartment. When Bertrand opens the door, a strange man with a moustache stands opposite him, pointing a gun at him. The strangely quirky visitor threatens to shoot him as he enters Bertrand's apartment, but hesitates and eventually strikes up a conversation with Bertrand.

A ludicrous dialog develops between the two gentlemen about the reasons for the suicide of one and the presence of the other. It is gradually revealed that the would-be murderer is none other than Death himself, one of many employees who pick up potential candidates. But the surprise is great when the man is informed by a phone call from a superior that he has made a mistake on the floor...

When Bertrand realizes that it is not him, but Clémence, who lives above him and whom he secretly admires, who is to be taken away by Father Death, his spirits are revived and a race against time begins.
