Heike Höhfeld from “Financial Education for All” will focus on economic violence in her presentation. When couples live together, they differ in how they access their shared finances. The question of who controls the money or who decides how the couple spends it is a source of concern in many relationships. “It doesn’t matter how much money is involved—under the spousal income splitting system, women are at a disadvantage. And who ends up filing the taxes? Economic violence has numerous facets that society takes for granted,” says Barbara Haferkamp-Weber on the topic. “The financially precarious reality women face affects their physical and mental health far beyond the point of a separation.”
