Lebenstedt with its three shopping centers
The City-Carrée, CityTorCenter and Stadtpassage shopping centers are an important addition to the inner-city retail trade. Lebenstedt in the north is the largest district and, with its town hall, main shopping streets and central facilities, the actual center of Salzgitter. Shopping here can be easily combined with visits to the authorities "right next door".
For example, the town hall, municipal library, post office, land registry office, local court and police station are all in the immediate vicinity. Gastronomic wishes are fulfilled in Lebenstedt by several restaurants and pubs with German and international cuisine.
Lebenstedt will continue to develop in the future: An architectural firm from Salzgitter has had a new retail center built in the city center for an investor from Braunschweig. This is also likely to be extended. This is the section between Deichmann and the Créteilpassage.
On October 12, 1954, the Salzgitter City Council made the decision to design the town center of Lebenstedt, which later became the city center. It was inserted into two well-developed streets (Chemnitzer Straße and Albert-Schweitzer-Straße) and planned as one of the first pedestrian zones in Germany (In den Blumentriften, Fischzug).
As early as 1955, interested parties had already registered for half of the planned stores. The entire city center area was initially dominated by the Staatsbank and Hertie department store buildings erected in 1957/1958, which also marked the beginning and end of the pedestrian zone.
The area between Blumentriften and Albert-Schweitzer-Straße, where soccer was still played in the early 1950s, was not built on until the early 1960s, including C&A.
