Salzgitter

Salzgitter as a business location

Salzgitter is the third largest industrial location in Lower Saxony with Northern Germany's largest inland port and one of nine regional centers in Lower Saxony.

City of contrasts.

The city benefits from its central location in a dynamic region with excellent transport connections and interesting location conditions for companies.

Thanks to its proximity to important transport axes, the regional center is easy to reach from all directions: With several junctions, the city is located directly on the A 39, which connects the north-south axis A 7 with the west-east axis A 2.

The tracks of the Peine-Salzgitter transport company lead directly to the Deutsche Bahn network.

As the location of the busiest inland port in Lower Saxony with a direct connection to the Mittelland Canal, Salzgitter is connected to shipping traffic. The international airport in Hanover and the regional and research airport in Braunschweig can also be reached within a very short time.

From Salzgitter to the whole world: this could be the motto for local businesses. After all, companies that operate nationally and internationally are based here. The so-called "Big Five" include: Salzgitter AG, Volkswagen, MAN Truck & Bus AG, Alstom, Robert Bosch Elektronik GmbH.

The Swedish furniture company IKEA also chose the city as the location for its largest distribution center worldwide. Salzgitter has been home to the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences since 1994. In 2011, the university was expanded to accommodate more than 2,000 students.

However, large companies are only one side of Salzgitter's economic structure. Medium-sized companies are also successful with intelligent products. They can be found in the supplier sector for the automotive industry and in pharmaceuticals, plastics and wood processing, electronics, precision mechanics and paper.

The spectrum is rounded off by modern crafts and high-performance agriculture on high-quality soils. The service sector with banks, trade and commerce is also becoming increasingly important.

Salzgitter is home to the following internationally and nationally important companies and facilities:

  • Salzgitter AG, steel production and processing
  • Volkswagen AG, engine plant
  • ALSTOM LHB, rail vehicles
  • M.A.N. Commercial Vehicles AG
  • Robert Bosch Elektronik GmbH, automotive electronics, control units
  • Deutsche Cargill Salzgitter GmbH, oil mill and malthouse
  • IKEA, distribution center
  • Schaper & Brümmer, pharmaceutical products
