Socially Integrative City - Social Cohesion: Steterburg

The city of Salzgitter has been undergoing a comprehensive, integrated and long-term urban redevelopment process in Steterburg since 2015.

Play paradise: The landlubber playground has a lot to offer.

The "Soziale Stadt Steterburg" redevelopment area is part of the Thiede district in the north of the city of Salzgitter. Steterburg has an attractive garden city-like settlement structure with spacious green areas and streets. Around 3,000 people live within the redevelopment boundaries. There are a number of urban development, structural and socio-spatial challenges and problems in Steterburg that are of particular importance for the development of the neighborhood.

Since 2015, Steterburg has been supported by the urban development program "Social Cohesion" (formerly "Socially Integrative City"). It is jointly funded by the federal, state and local authorities. Two thirds of the funding is provided by the federal and state governments as refinancing for the town. The city bears its own share of 1/3 of the expenditure accordingly.

The "Area-related urban development concept for the Salzgitter - Steterburg area" (2015) formed the basis for the urban development funding program. In 2018, this concept was supplemented and updated with the "Adaptation of the Integrated Action Concept for the Social City of Steterburg 2019 - 2021". It forms the basis for the continuation of the program and the implementation of further measures in the years 2019 to 2021.

A supplementary paper focusing on "Climate protection and climate adaptation" was added to this update in 2020. Within the "Social Cohesion Salzgitter Steterburg" program, measures to adapt to demographic and economic structural changes as well as climate protection and climate adaptation are combined in an integrated approach.

The upgrading of the public space plays a central role in the urban redevelopment in Steterburg. The quality of life in the redevelopment area can be significantly increased by improving the residential environment and building places to linger, play and meet. At the same time, positive effects can be achieved for the image of the neighborhood.

Projects and initiatives

The redesign and upgrading of the old playground on Danziger Straße into the "Landratten Spielplatz" was the first major construction project within the urban renewal process in the public space. The playground is located in the inner area of the Danziger Straße/Schäfersteig/Am Sternkamp/Breslauer Straße street block and was opened in 2019. New places to play, linger and meet were created on around 4,000 square meters and the pathways were improved.

With the establishment of the redevelopment advisory board in 2019, local residents and representatives from various institutions are working on a voluntary basis in a committee to further shape the positive development of Steterburg. An important element of this is the disposal fund, which provides money for ideas and measures to make Steterburg more beautiful and attractive: 22 electricity distribution boxes painted by local residents, benches for senior citizens, a lighting system and planters with flowers are just some of the features that enrich the neighborhood.

The city of Salzgitter has been supported on site since the start of the redevelopment project by the neighborhood management it has commissioned. It is responsible for coordination, participation and information between the administration, politicians, citizens and stakeholders in the neighborhood.

A new daycare center is being built in Brotweg.

Neighborhood management on site

The neighborhood management accompanies the processes for the respective measures. The employees involve the residents and stakeholders in order to actively include them in the urban renewal process. The two-person team has its office directly on the market square at Lange Hecke 4 and is the point of contact for residents.

The completed expansion of Danziger Straße in 2020 and the tree planting in Steterburg set important structural accents, as did the demolition of Brotweg in 2021. A building plot for a daycare center is being created on the 5,750 square meter site. This project will further enhance the Steterburg district and pave the way for further district developments.
