Salzgitter

Marketplace is redesigned

Mayor Frank Klingebiel opened the newly designed market square in Salzgitter-Bad.

Mayor Frank Klingebiel planted a lime tree on the newly designed market square together with local mayor Wolfgang Bauer.

The structural redesign of the square, which is so important for Salzgitter-Bad, lasted from July to the end of November 2015.

But before the work began, citizens were closely involved in the design. They contributed their ideas and thus helped to create the design. In two expert groups and two public meetings, they were given the opportunity to make suggestions for the redesign of the market square and discuss them.

Citizens and local council members were also involved in a meeting of the South Local Council in March 2015: Around 120 people from Salzgitter-Bad gathered information, asked questions and contributed additional ideas. The local council then unanimously approved the draft resolution.

The redesign of the market square had already been a recurring topic in the local council, because before the structural changes, walls, steps and raised beds had divided the square, which was designed in the 1970s, into three areas, making it no longer perceivable as a whole for passers-by. The paving was no longer up to date, and the existing raised beds and edging were in a condition in which they could not be maintained. Another shortcoming: the square was not barrier-free.

For this very reason, one focus of the redesign was the redesign of the central area, which now features a generous flight of steps that makes the square more manageable as part of the diagonal main route from Marktstraße to Bohlweg. The advantage of the new staircase is that it is barrier-free. It has a comfortable gradient, making it easier to walk up and down, and people with limited mobility can easily cross the square via a ramp.

In addition, the pavilion, which many residents in Salzgitter-Bad found annoying, was removed. But not everything was dismantled: the fountain and the existing sculptures have been retained. Some of the latter were moved. A recreation area with seating was also created in the area of the fountain. The play equipment for children is new. They were installed in such a way that they can be dismantled to allow multifunctional use for the Old Town Festival, for example.

Care was also taken to preserve the existing trees as far as possible and to plant more. However, two diseased trees had to be felled and new ones planted in their place. Mayor Frank Klingebiel planted one of them together with local mayor Wolfgang Bauer on the opening day.
