Salzgitter

Exhibition on contemporary history expanded

To mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the city of Salzgitter, the contemporary history section "Salzgitter - the new city" in the Salder Castle Municipal Museum has been made more attractive for visitors.

It can also be visited on Salzgitter Day on Sunday, August 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of a guided tour.

The previous exhibition was opened to the public on April 1, 2012 to mark the city's 70th anniversary. This was the first time that the history of the Salzgitter region from 1930 onwards was presented in the former "horse stable", which had been converted into an exhibition space.

In order to make this exhibition even more attractive, a start was made on making the presentation more appealing in view of the city's 75th anniversary. A small special exhibition area was created at the end of 2016. It began with a traveling exhibition by the House of Silesia about the events in Silesia in the 1940s. The Salder Castle Municipal Museum contributed numerous objects on the history of Katowice and Silesia. Other smaller special exhibitions, for example on the registration office or youth culture, will follow.

In addition to the history of the barrack camps, the original exhibition focused on the planned "Hermann Göring City" and the resulting consequences in the first post-war years. This concept envisaged using a large installation to present the resistance to the dismantling of the steelworks as the actual birth of the city of Salzgitter. For reasons of space, this was abandoned in 2012. Numerous text panels provided visitors with further information on the history of the city up to the 1980s.

Despite the large exhibition area of around 440 square meters, however, it was not possible to cover all aspects of Salzgitter's history from 1930 to 2000. Over the past five years, numerous Salzgitter citizens have donated objects to the museum that illustrate the history of the city in the 20th century. For example, cutlery and crockery that were originally part of the basic equipment of the barrack camps have been donated.

By reducing the number of text panels in the exhibition, it has now been possible, for example, to integrate the installation "Blasting of the cooling tower of the steelworks", which had to be set up on the first floor of the horse stable for space reasons, in a prominent position within the town's history.

Additional display cases with objects that illustrate everyday life in Salzgitter in the second half of the 20th century further enhance the exhibition.
