This kick-off of the participation campaign was followed by an on-site meeting on February 28 and the presentation of the resulting concept on March 15.
The nine class representatives and their representatives from the third and fourth years were enthusiastic participants. They took part in this event on behalf of their classes. "The children want to help shape their neighborhood and get involved," reports Franziska Gillner, vice principal of Steterburg Primary School. Their wishes were recorded by landscape architect Johanna Sievers. It was explained to the children that a football pitch for the older children would be created on Brotweg and that the focus would be on the younger children on Danziger Straße. "The children have put a lot of thought into it. They thought about the very little ones, but also about the older ones"; the landscape architect is impressed. Movement is important to the class representatives. The children want to be active and want equipment that is all about movement. Because the approximately 4,000 square meter playground has a connection to Danziger Strasse and the city of Gdansk by the sea, the children liked the idea that there could be a ship to climb on and lots of sand reminiscent of the sea. "The class representatives are the representatives for their classes. The children are aware of this responsibility," explained the landscape architect. All of the children are building owners for the first major construction project within the Socially Integrative City urban development program.
"We would like to see a high level of acceptance for the redesign of the playground," emphasized Michael Tacke, City Councillor for Building, Urban Planning, Urban Development and the Environment. This project should be launched together with the children and citizens. The political bodies are expected to decide on the project by the middle of the year. This redesign measure is derived from the integrated action plan for Steterburg and has project costs of 328,000 euros. The measure is supported by urban development funds from the federal and state governments (funding amounts to 2/3). The remaining own contribution is to be made by the town of Salzgitter. The city planning officer would like to see a high level of participation so that the project can be implemented for the children.
