The building on Brotweg was erected in the early 1970s and was used for various purposes. As the building became increasingly dilapidated, it could no longer be used for several years.
Last year, the local council of the village of Nordost and the administrative committee decided that the building should be demolished in accordance with the objectives of the preparatory investigations for the redevelopment area and the adaptation of the integrated action plan for the social city of Steterburg from 2019. As a subsequent use, the property is to be used for the construction of a community facility for childcare.
The demolition work has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of March. The costs for the demolition amount to around 160,000 euros. Refinancing (funding) with urban development funds is possible because the building is located in the Steterburg "Socially Integrative City" redevelopment area.
The removal of the contaminated building and the construction of a new, modern community facility on the same site is seen as a climate protection measure, as the new building falls well below the minimum legal standards. In addition, existing areas will be reused, thus avoiding the sealing of new areas. This project will further enhance the Steterburg district and pave the way for further district developments.
The subsequent use after the demolition has already been determined: a building plot for a daycare center is being created on the 5,750 square meter site. At its most recent meeting, the Salzgitter City Council unanimously approved a tender for the planning services.
