A treasure trove of gold to discover

Buccaneers are ready to board, while a shark is already sharpening its teeth: But the children at the landlubber playground in Steterburg need have no fear. On the contrary. The colorful garage wall makes the little ones, but also the grown-ups, smile at the laughing starfish and crabs.

Nicole Brito de la Cruz, Robert Bischoff and neighborhood manager Sabine Naats (from left) invite the children to a treasure hunt.

The idea was born with the planning of the new playground with its many play and activity options. Back in 2018, the gray and unsightly garage walls on the side facing Danziger Straße caught the eye. "We could make them beautiful," thought Nicole Brito de la Cruz, who initiated the community project of 22 painted electricity distribution boxes last year.

The artist submitted another application to the disposition fund for the artistic design of some of the garage rear walls, which was unanimously approved by the redevelopment advisory board. Nicole Brito de la Cruz already knew the Wolfenbüttel graffiti artist Robert Bischoff from the painting campaigns on the electricity distribution boxes. For the current project, the graffiti artist gave a workshop for interested young people who wanted to spray the garage wall professionally.

The owner of the garages, van der Horst Wohnen, was asked whether the garage walls would be made available for the spray campaign. "We were delighted that they agreed because it would allow us to set another visible example for the community," says neighborhood manager Sabine Naats. The planning could begin.

Vacation mood at the landlubber playground in Steterburg.

"Together with the young people, we thought about which motifs we wanted to spray. Of course, we wanted to visibly pick up on the motto of the landlubber playground," says Nicole Brito de la Cruz. The group learned from Robert Bischoff that larger areas should be sprayed first before going into the details. Sun, sky and palm trees were followed by an island and, of course, a ship with pirates. Different spray cans with different applicators had to be used for each motif.

The 18 and 19-year-olds then learned, for example, how best to hold the cans and which technique to use for spraying. "The details were mostly created spontaneously," says Robert Bischoff. The crab with long eyelashes, the starfish or the shark with its long teeth. The young people implemented the ideas artistically, even if one or two areas had to be painted over because the implementation didn't look as planned at first...

But the young people sprayed better and better. The visitors to the playground and local residents liked it so much that they got talking to the graffiti artists and also expressed their wishes. The children were delighted with the picturesque vacation atmosphere of the Landratten playground. They are particularly excited about the fact that there are pieces of gold to be found. The treasure hunt can continue......
