"We have now received the funding decision from the federal government for around 1.9 million euros," says Mayor Frank Klingebiel happily. "This means that the financial framework is in place, and now it's time for implementation! It is a great gain that the city has successfully participated in two funding programs. With the state funding program "Perspektive Innenstadt", 1.9 million euros are already available to upgrade our two centers Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad. It was very ambitious to also participate in the federal funding call at the same time, especially as both funding programs have very tight time frames. The aim of both programs is to make inner cities more attractive as quickly as possible. This requires all stakeholders to act quickly and purposefully. But the success proves us right: with a total of around 3.8 million euros, the city has a considerable amount at its disposal for our inner cities, which I am very pleased about," explains Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel.
A total of 14 measures were approved for the period up to August 31, 2025 with the funds from the federal government.
SZentren-SZunkunft - First of all, a future concept is to be developed for Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad with the support of an agency, which will form the framework for the various individual measures. Together with various stakeholders, ideas are to be developed and strengths identified in order to initiate the necessary strategic repositioning.
This core project will be accompanied by various immediate measures. For example, a joint umbrella brand is to be developed in order to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of existing marketing activities with a uniform word and image brand and to increase the regional and supra-regional reach.
Makers and doers wanted - Vacant properties are to be rented to interested parties at a reduced rate so that they can implement their innovative and/or creative ideas in the city centers. To this end, the city of Salzgitter will launch a call for interested parties to apply with their concept.
Mobil ans Ziel - Bicycle parking facilities and bicycle service stations are to be set up to further strengthen cycling and improve the bicycle-friendly environment.
Implement your ideas! - With a disposition fund, the inner city actors are to be provided with unbureaucratic financial resources for the realization of smaller projects in the two centers. A committee is formed from all the people involved, which can decide on the allocation of funds within the framework of the funding guidelines. The city of Salzgitter is looking forward to active participation and suggestions for ideas. The start of this campaign will be announced shortly.
Get out of everyday life - planned events are intended to further revitalize the inner cities. In 2023 and 2025, a "lighting magic" will illuminate the centers during the dark season. In summer 2025, a "beach area" will be set up in both centers. Sand, sun and more will bring a short break to the centers of Salzgitter.
Something for the eye - There will also be visual changes in the centers. Mobile, seasonally planted pop-up areas will enhance the appearance of the city centers. To promote gastronomy, "mobile greenery" will enhance the outdoor areas.
To support the implementation and monitoring of the projects and as a link between city stakeholders and the city administration, a temporary city management position will be created for the funding period.
"With this overall package, the city of Salzgitter has the unique opportunity to develop and implement sustainable ideas together with all stakeholders and our citizens, which will enormously increase the attractiveness of the two centers," concludes Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel.
Information on the launch and implementation of the individual projects mentioned will be provided separately.
