Simone Semmler, Equal Opportunities Officer for the city of Salzgitter, explains: "The last few days have made it clear how unstable peace in the world - including in Europe - can be. Most of the refugees are women and children. They are already exposed to multiple threats and experiences of violence during their flight. Once they have arrived here in Salzgitter, it is important that all helpers are sensitive to the possible continuing threat to women and children through sexual exploitation. We know that the vast majority of people who spontaneously offer their help here in Salzgitter really mean well for the women, after all, many people in Salzgitter have a family history of flight themselves. However, there are reports and indications of dubious offers to refugee women seeking help from numerous cities in Germany. We want to prevent this here in Salzgitter and have set up a central telephone number in the city where people who want to offer accommodation or other help can contact us. And please do so! By reporting them to the city, we want to ensure at an early stage that the women arriving here receive exactly the help they need and do not end up in the hands of very questionable people.
The two online forms on the city's website at www.salzgitter.de/ukrainehilfe (opens in a new tab) or the telephone hotline on 05341/839-7777 (daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can be used to report offers of help.
Semmler concludes: "We have also referred to this topic in our question & answer catalog, which we give to the arriving refugees. I hope that we are doing everything we can to ensure that the women who have arrived here can rely on the help on offer."
