No more children's passports from 2024

From January 1, 2024, it will no longer be possible to apply for a child's passport. Instead of the children's passport, a "normal" passport, also known as an ePassport, can be applied for.

This change is governed by the Act on the Modernization of Passport, Identity Card and Alien Law Documents.

Children's passports issued by the end of 2023 will remain valid. Renewals or updates of documents already issued will no longer be possible from 01.01.2024. Parents who wish to travel abroad with their children will then need a passport or identity card. These documents for people under the age of 24 are valid for a maximum of six years.

The BürgerCenter of the city of Salzgitter recommends checking the validity of all identity documents, not just those of children, in good time before traveling abroad. The documents should already be checked when booking the vacation.
