Salzgitter

At the Salder Castle Municipal Museum: Exhibition Cultural Landscapes Water

The Braunschweigische Landschaft has dedicated a photo competition to the element of water. From January 11 to March 1, the photos of the nominated artists in the competition, as well as those of other artists, can be seen in an exhibition at the Salder Castle Municipal Museum in Salzgitter-Salder. The exhibition opens on Sunday, January 11 at 11 am.

More than 100 applications were received by Braunschweigische Landschaft, and almost 50 of them made it to the final round with their submitted projects. A jury of experts decided on the four finalists. Jette Held (Tanne/Harz), Kai Löffelbein (Hanover), Oscar Lebeck (Leipzig) and Yana Wernicke (Hochheim am Main) emerged successful from the process. The competition was announced on the occasion of the "Water" theme year of the Braunschweigische Landschaft.

The nominees and their projects:

Jette Held (*1982) is interested in the chemistry of things. They leave traces that lead to the
lead to the picture. Inscribed in these images is the photochemical process in the form of
time and reaction. Based on her artistic approach, she has produced a
portrait series of the Oker. It consists of photograms that she exposed directly
exposed at night in the water of the Oker. Immediately afterwards, the photographs were
developed by her on site using an analog hand printing process.

For Oscar Lebeck (*1993), remembrance and commemoration in Germany are essential
foundations of the democratic self-image. In his photographs, the artist
the specific possibilities of art to make historical events present.
historical events. The image of the Helmstedt lignite mining area was characterized by open-cast pits,
slag heaps and industrial plants. With the advent of the energy transition
the landscape in the lignite mining area began to change. It is increasingly becoming a
recreational area with lakes. In his work, Lebeck uses mirrors to play with
mirrors with the water of the lakes and the adjacent surroundings and brings the two
new together.

Kai Löffelbein's (*1981) work reflects his interest in the way political and economic structures shape modern society. He has worked in various countries in Asia and Africa. For this project, he has undertaken an exploration of riverside landscapes to capture the dynamic interactions between the river and its surroundings. The photographic documentation includes various natural scenarios such as floodplains, meadows and forested banks. Each of these elements provides a visual context for understanding the ecological and cultural aspects that characterize the river.

In her work, Yana Wernicke (*1990) deals with the photographic representation of animals and the relationship between humans and nature and other living creatures. For this project, she focused on the Jurassic Sea. A sea that once was and that has left striking traces in the Braunschweig landscape to this day. At the Schandelah excavation site, she was particularly interested in the local people and their research.

These works, combined with selected works from the existing collection of the Braunschweigische Landschaft, are on an exhibition tour and can now be seen in the rooms of the Municipal Art Collections in Salder Castle.
