Organic waste garbage can in winter: Tips for filling and handling

The frosty temperatures are currently making it difficult for employees of the SRB to empty the organic waste garbage cans.

The organic waste in the bins is often so frozen that even with repeated shaking during the emptying process, the organic waste garbage cans can only be emptied partially or not at all. It is also possible that the bin may rupture or burst during repeated attempts to empty it. If the garbage can is damaged, this must be reported to the SRB by the affected citizens so that they can receive a new garbage can.

Incomplete emptying and the resulting container damage can be avoided by following a few tips when filling:

Moist organic waste quickly freezes to the walls of the bin. To prevent this, you should line the organic waste garbage can with packing paper, egg cartons or dry shrub cuttings before filling it.

  • Laying newspaper and shrub cuttings between the organic waste and at the edge also prevents freezing. This way, only the layer of newspaper usually sticks and the organic waste falls out.
  • Kitchen waste should be well dried or wrapped in newspaper before disposal so that excess moisture is absorbed.
  • Plastic bags should not be used. Plastic bags or bioplastic bags, which are made of biodegradable plastics, are excluded from disposal in the organic waste garbage can in the city of Salzgitter. This also applies to bioplastic bags certified in accordance with DIN EN 14995 or EN 13432. So-called bioplastics or biodegradable plastics do not decompose quickly enough in the standard composting times in the plants and the smallest plastic particles are released into the environment as microplastics via the compost. It is also important not to compress the waste, as this makes emptying even more difficult.
  • Another tip is to loosen the organic waste from the edge of the bin with a handle or spade before emptying. If possible, the organic waste garbage can should be placed in a sheltered place - for example against the wall of the house, in the shed or in the garage - and only placed on the street from 6 a.m. on the day of collection.

Please bear in mind that the refuse collection staff also only have limited options for emptying your organic waste garbage can and will always use these in your best interests.
