In the castle's Fürstensaal, which was packed with over 80 interested people from near and far, the Salzgitter region and its immediate surroundings in the late Middle Ages were examined in detail in six lectures. The conference series is a joint event organized by the Salder Castle Municipal Museum (Cultural Department of the City of Salzgitter) and the Lower Saxony regional group of the German Castle Association.
The late Middle Ages - roughly the period from 1250 to 1550 - saw the heyday of the aristocratic castle and the transition from castle to palace. As everywhere in the "Old Empire", castles also became specialized in the present-day area of the city of Salzgitter. Administrative seats and fortresses were established alongside buildings belonging to the lords and nobility.
After the welcoming address for the city of Salzgitter by department head Dr. Dirk Härdrich, the following speakers spoke: Dr. Heiko Laß on "New castles, new functions, new lords, new forms", Dr. Nadine Mai on "The manor in the Duchy of Brunswick and Lüneburg", Dr. Christian Ottersbach on "A long Middle Ages: aristocratic castle building between the 15th and early 17th centuries", Dr. Gudrun Pischke on "Noble families of the late Middle Ages and their former activities in present-day Salzgitter", museum director Arne Homann on "Small castles, large courtyards: examples from Salzgitter and the surrounding area" and monument conservator Christoph Lücke on "Lichtenberg Castle - The last years (decades?): Decline / Destruction / Demolition".
The dedicated museum team, supported by volunteers from the Lichtenberg Castle Association, ensured that everything ran smoothly.
The conference series is generously supported by the Lichtenberg Castle Society, the Salder Castle Society and the Salzgitter History Society
