Driver's license exchange for those born after 1971

Whether it's a grey card, pink cardboard or white plastic card: every driving license issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license by 2033. This will happen in stages.

The Citizens' Services, Foreigners' Affairs and Elections Department would like to point out that driving licenses must be exchanged by the deadline of 19.01.2025 for citizens who are still in possession of an old (pink or grey) paper driving license and were born in 1971 or later.

For those who are already in possession of an EU driving license, the deadlines will be staggered over the coming years, regardless of the year of birth. The decisive factor is the date on which the EU driving license was issued. An overview of this can be found on the website of the city of Salzgitter

Citizens born before 1953 who still have a paper driver's license have until 19.01.2033 to exchange it.

The Citizens' Services, Foreigners' Affairs and Elections Department would also like to point out that the scale of fees for road traffic measures was raised on 01.01.2025 due to increased production and shipping costs of the Federal Printing Office. A fee of 32.90 euros will therefore now be charged for the exchange of a paper driving license including direct mailing to your home.

Appointments to apply for a driver's license exchange can be made online on the City of Salzgitter website (www.salzgitter.de) or by calling 05341/839-3000.
