Mayor Klingebiel: "Yellow bag goes - yellow garbage can comes!"

On January 1, 2026, the yellow garbage can will replace the yellow bag in Salzgitter.

"With this change, we are ensuring greater order, sustainability and cleanliness," says Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel.

The municipal waste management company (SRB) remains responsible for the disposal of lightweight packaging.

Only the distribution of yellow garbage cans will be taken over by an external service provider. In November, the yellow garbage cans will be set up step by step and by the end of the year, all yellow garbage cans should be set up in the city of Salzgitter. The yellow bags will be collected for the last time on New Year's Eve.

"Yellow sacks flying around, some damaged yellow sacks with their contents scattered on sidewalks and streets, too few yellow sacks at the collection points - there have always been reasons to be annoyed and that will be history in future," says Klingebiel, "There is also good news: there are no additional costs for the end consumer for using the yellow garbage can."

The disposal and recycling service for the packaging is already included in the purchase price of the packaged goods.

The yellow garbage can, which is emptied every two weeks, is distributed automatically without prior notification; the property owner does not need to be present in person.

For properties that have not yet had a yellow garbage can, the number of newly delivered yellow garbage cans per property is based on the number of residual waste containers registered there. One 240-liter yellow garbage can is provided for each residual waste container (20 liters to 240 liters). For residual waste containers with 660 or 770 liters, a 1,100 liter yellow garbage can is provided. For a 1,100 liter residual waste container, two 1,100 liter yellow garbage cans are provided.

There are two sizes of yellow garbage cans with a capacity of 240 liters and 1,100 liters. No other bin sizes are planned.

Should there be any changes to the size of the yellow garbage cans:

If, after the yellow garbage cans have been set up, it is determined that the need for bins is different than originally planned, change requests or repeat orders are possible. You can find the online form here. (opens in a new tab)

Further information on yellow garbage cans in general can be found here.

Waste calendar:

As usual, the municipal waste calendar can also be found on the municipal homepage. By entering the respective street in the online waste calendar, an annual calendar with all disposal dates can be created as a PDF.
