The climate protection team has reorganized itself for these and future tasks.
The Salzgitter integrated climate protection concept was drawn up in 2013 and adopted by the city council in 2014 as a self-binding guideline for action. A climate protection manager, Jan Holzenbecher, was appointed for the first time in 2015 and is responsible for implementation.
The "Climate protection sub-concept for adapting to climate change" adopted by the council in 2021 focuses on climatic developments and impacts. The aim of this climate protection sub-concept is to specifically identify the current and expected effects of climate change for Salzgitter and to develop a long-term strategy for dealing with climate change and adaptation measures. Building on this, measures are to be initiated for the expected increase in extreme weather events such as heat waves, dry spells, heavy rainfall events, extreme snowfall and storms.
Viviane Bröker, who joined the climate protection team in June 2024, is responsible for this. "This climate protection sub-concept serves as a basis for action for measures relating to heat prevention, water protection and heavy rain prevention. The aim is to adapt Salzgitter to climate change and achieve sustainable development in the city," says the environmental scientist.
The concept is also a guideline for future activities to minimize the adverse effects and damage caused by climate change.
This topic is linked to the unsealing of surfaces, which improves water infiltration, reduces flood risks, increases biodiversity in cities and thus provides better heat protection.
Brigitte Reinefeld has been primarily responsible for the creation of this unsealing concept and the creation of an overview of heavy rainfall hotspots in Salzgitter since October 1, 2024.
Katharina Migyu joined the climate protection management team on January 1, 2024 to update the climate protection concept and deal with current issues such as municipal heat planning.
In addition, the City of Salzgitter's climate protection team plans and develops concepts and projects on the current topics of energy, the climate crisis, mobility and sustainability and implements them with project partners.
