Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel explains: "A lot will happen in Steterburg over the next two years if the political committees approve the projects I have proposed. We want to further upgrade the Steterburg district and sustainably improve the living and residential environment. The federal government, the state and the city of Salzgitter are providing a total of around 1.4 million euros for this, of which the city's share of just under 470,000.00 euros is 1/3 of the total costs."
The three planned projects are to be implemented over the next two years. Starting with the local council of the north-east district on Thursday, February 20, the political committees will now have to deal with the individual projects and decide on them, emphasized Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, adding: "There was already broad approval for the project ideas at the citizens' meeting on January 23."
The following measures are planned:
1. "Unter den Eichen" playground: creation of play, sports and recreation areas
The playground is used by many young and old citizens in the neighborhood. For this reason, there was a participatory campaign in August 2024 for the design of this playground.
The aim is not only to create an attractive play and exercise area for children, but also to ensure that the renovated playground can be used by all generations in future. A very special element and a unique selling point is the planned roller track. The asphalted circuit can be used with various types of wheeled equipment, such as balance bikes, scooters or scooters, but also with rollators and wheelchairs. The playground is intended to encourage movement, but also invite people to linger and be designed in harmony with nature. The preservation or addition of trees and shrubs ensures that shady areas are also created. Seating and picnic areas will be integrated into the design.
2. square design at the Schulring/Unter den Eichen intersection:
This junction area is an important traffic connection. The junction area is currently oversized with a high degree of sealing. The area will be redesigned and traffic safety and accessibility will be improved by removing the lanes, creating crossing options, paving the junction area and installing ramps. Trees and planted islands will improve the quality of the area.
3. forecourt of St. Bernward parish in the Pappeldamm/Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße intersection area
This important traffic connection also currently consists of an oversized, unstructured roadway in the area in front of the church and the daycare center.
Road safety and accessibility will be improved by removing the lanes, creating crossing options, paving the intersection area in front of the daycare center and installing ramps. Trees and planted islands improve the quality of life. The barrier-free expansion of the bus stop and the functional reorganization of the recycling collection point are further important project components.
Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel explains the next steps:
"Following the previous consultations in the local council and the specialist committees, the Salzgitter City Council will make a final decision on the construction measures I have proposed on April 1. If the council agrees, tenders will be invited, contracts awarded and then construction work will begin after the design and implementation planning.
The plan is to implement individual measures from the fall of 2025, but by 2026 at the latest.
Important: The public will be informed about the details before all construction work begins."
