The voter notification sent out for the Kommunalwahl on September 13, 2026, also applies to the mayoral runoff election on September 27. No new voter notification will be sent.
Apply for a postal vote
The application can be submitted conveniently online using the form (opens in a new tab) on the City of Salzgitter’s website (opens in a new tab), by email to briefwahlbuerostadt.salzgitterde, or using the application form on the back of the election notice.
Absentee ballot materials have been mailed out since September 17. Since sufficient time should be allowed for mailing, the City of Salzgitter recommends applying for an absentee ballot as early as possible and, if possible, voting in person at one of the two local absentee voting offices. Absentee voting will be available until Friday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. However, starting Wednesday, September 23, the mailing of materials will be at the voter’s own risk, as timely delivery by mail can no longer be guaranteed. In such cases, it is recommended that voters pick up the absentee ballot materials in person and return them to the absentee voting office.
It is not possible to submit a mail-in ballot at a polling place on Election Day. In this case, ballots may be deposited in the town hall’s mailbox in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt by 6:00 p.m. The mailbox at the Salzgitter-Bad branch office will be emptied for the last time at 4:00 p.m. on Election Sunday.
In the event of a sudden serious illness, the ballot and absentee voting materials may, as an exception, be requested and issued on Saturday, September 26, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., as well as on Election Sunday, September 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Salzgitter-Lebenstedt City Hall.

Voters do not need an appointment to cast their ballots. They must bring their voter notification with them. If the voter notification has been misplaced, voters may also prove their identity with their ID card.
Citizens who have not received a voter registration notice but believe they are eligible to vote must check the voter registry and, if necessary, submit a request to correct the voter registry if they want to ensure that they can cast their vote. This can be done at the absentee voting offices starting Friday, September 18.
