The first phase of construction began on Thursday, July 2, with a complete closure of the intersection, which will be lifted when school starts. All work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026.
What improvements will the redesign bring?
- Speed limits will be reduced in the area of the intersection.
- The oversized intersection area will be scaled back, and crosswalks will be equipped with tactile elements to shorten crossing distances
- Paving of the intersection area and installation of ramps
- Improvements through new pavement surfacing
- Traffic safety and accessibility will be enhanced, thereby improving conditions for cyclists and public transit.
- Trees and planting islands enhance the quality of the public space.
First construction phase:
- Schulring must be completely closed at the Unter den Eichen intersection during the summer break, from Thursday, July 2, through Tuesday, August 11.
Second construction phase:
- After the summer break (August 13), only the Unter den Eichen intersection will be closed so that school buses and cars can continue to travel on the Schulring as usual.
Important for the first and second construction phases:
- Access to properties on Schulring, as well as to the police station and businesses located there, will generally be maintained. Otherwise, direct coordination with residents will take place in advance.
- Pedestrians will be routed past the construction area. The pedestrian route will be adjusted as construction progresses and will remain accessible at all times.
- On Am Hagenholz Street, the restricted no-stopping zone on the left-hand side will be changed to an absolute no-stopping zone during construction to ensure access for emergency vehicles.
Good to know:
- To ensure that through traffic can detour well around the construction site, signs will be posted at the intersections of Danziger Straße and Schäfersteig, as well as in the area where Breslauer Straße, Am Hagenholz, and Schulring meet.
- Residents have been notified.
- The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026. Weather-related delays are possible.
- Traffic disruptions are to be expected. The City of Salzgitter asks for your understanding regarding the restrictions associated with the construction project.
