For young people up to the age of 18, only the legal representatives can apply for a passport. This is usually both parents together.
Both parents must apply for a passport for minors if they are jointly entitled to parental custody and the parents live together.

The application can only be submitted by one parent if the consent of the other parent is confirmed in writing.

To verify the signature, it is necessary to present the ID or a copy.

The passport applicant must appear in person, as their own signature (from the age of 10) must be sealed into the passport and fingerprints (from the age of 6) must be submitted.
Children under the age of 6 must also be present for identification when applying!

Documents required for the application:

• 1 new photograph (biometric)
• the previous identity card/passport
• if applicable, the last civil status certificate (birth or marriage certificate)
• the possibility of submitting 2 fingerprints
• Consent for minors, if applicable

The application form cannot be completed in advance as it is printed out directly at the BürgerCenter. The fee is 70.00 euros, up to the age of 24 only 37.50 euros.

A previous passport cannot be extended, a new passport with a new picture must be applied for and fingerprints must be submitted. No fingerprints can be added to passports that already have a chip.

The collection of a completed passport can be carried out by an authorized person. The collection takes place at the information desk of the BürgerCenter. Passports still in your possession must be handed in when you collect them, as they are the property of the Federal Republic of Germany (§ 1 Para. 3 Passport Act).

If a passport is lost, the loss must be reported immediately to the passport authority. If the loss is due to theft, a report must also be made to the police.

If you urgently need a passport, you can apply for an express passport. This costs 32 euros in addition to the normal fee and is processed in around 4 working days.

If the express order is not sufficient, a temporary passport can be issued in an emergency.

Example: You have an emergency and need to travel in 2 days, but do not have a valid passport. In this case, you can be issued a temporary passport on presentation of a booking confirmation. This is valid for one year and costs €26.

Please note: Not all countries accept a temporary passport on entry. Please inform yourself in advance on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
