The investment volume is around 300,000 euros. On June 10, the city's administrative committee will decide on the pirate camp. Completion of the new facility on the east bank is planned for September 20, 2008, World Children's Day. Together with the existing beach volleyball courts and the beach soccer field, Klingebiel is convinced that the pirate camp will become a new supra-regional attraction for children and young people on Salzgittersee.
As he explains together with city treasurer Ekkehard Grunwald and Dietrich Leptien, head of the SRB, the future playground located near the DLRG tower will be structured by several dunes and differentiated according to age groups. The highest elevation reaches 2.50 meters. Some of the play equipment will be specially made for the new playground by the manufacturer according to specified requirements.
The design is based on this scenario: during a storm, a pirate ship ran aground and broke into three parts, the stern, central mast and bow. The stern is close to the water, the mast with its basket towers over this area with the hoisted pirate flag and the bow leans steeply upwards. After stranding, the crew abandoned the ship using on-board equipment such as rope ladders, knotted ropes, ropes, boarding nets and planks.
The plateau of a large dune was fortified by a group of pirates with a defensive fence made of thick planks. A slide tower with two levels is built on it. A slide tube with a length of eleven meters and a height difference of 5.50 meters will be the most attractive play equipment in the city. Further equipment will be placed between the ship and the beach soccer field. Sand and water play areas have been developed for younger children and there will be a toddler climbing area.
As Klingebiel emphasizes, girls and boys from the Diakonie-Treff in the Seeviertel residential area are involved in the project development. Firstly, the model planned by the city and the play equipment manufacturer will be discussed with them and possible changes made; secondly, they can realize their own ideas on the playground or in its surroundings with an artist. The Lord Mayor concluded: "With the pirate camp, we are following the Council's wish to further develop Salzgittersee as a local recreation destination and we are once again underlining the city's child and family friendliness."
