Parents are primarily responsible for raising and caring for a child. However, in some cases, additional support from the government may be necessary for child-rearing.

Although this assistance is provided to the parents, it is guided by the best interests of the child or adolescent. This means that the child or adolescent must be involved in decisions that affect him or her. Services offered include, among others,

• parenting counseling,
• social group work,
• parenting support,
• care assistants,
• social-pedagogical family support,
• Day group care,
• Full-time foster care,
• Residential care and other forms of supervised housing, or
• intensive individualized social-educational support.

In addition, the Youth Welfare Office decides on the provision of integration assistance and assistance for young adults, as well as shared living arrangements for mothers/fathers and children.
