Dragon boat races are best known for taking place outdoors on lakes and rivers. But this popular team sport also brings excitement and action to the indoor swimming pool. Bäder, Sport und Freizeit Salzgitter GmbH (BSF) and the Kanu Club Salzgitter e. V. are bringing a new variation of dragon boat racing to the sports pool at the Stadtbad Salzgitter-Lebenstedt with the first Helios Indoor Dragon Boat Cup.

“When the Klinikdrachen and the Kanu-Club Salzgitter approached us, we were thrilled by the idea. Dragon boat racing in a swimming pool—that’s going to be something special! We want to inspire many new teams and create a day of sports together with plenty of fun and team spirit,” says Lukas Nowak of the BSF, full of anticipation for the premiere. “After 20 years at Salzgittersee, we’re excited to start a new chapter with the Indoor Cup,” adds Doreen Schäfer of the BSF.

In the Indoor Cup, two teams compete against each other in a dragon boat. Eight athletes from each team sit facing each other and try to move the boat across the finish line on the opposing side with powerful, synchronized paddle strokes. A duel lasts a maximum of 90 seconds. In this short time, strength, technique, and—above all—team coordination are what matter most. This unique competition format promises thrilling duels for both participants and spectators. No prior experience is required.

Helios Klinikum Salzgitter is also supporting the event as the main sponsor for its premiere at the Stadtbad.
Hospital CEO Benedikt Meider is looking forward to the new format: “We’re very happy to support the Indoor Cup. It
brings people together and enriches the sports and recreational offerings in Salzgitter. Now we’re eager to see how
our hospital team does in the pool!”
