Why does my child have to go to school?
All children who have reached the age of six by a fixed cut-off date are required to attend school at the beginning of the following school year.
Compulsory schooling generally lasts 12 school years. It is divided into at least nine years of compulsory full-time schooling at primary level and at lower secondary level. Compulsory schooling is then completed at upper secondary level by attending a general education or vocational school or, for trainees, by attending a vocational school. It can also be shortened in individual cases.
Truancy is defined as recurring or prolonged and generally unexcused absence from school. Occasional truancy can also constitute truancy.
Truancy is an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine of up to 1000 euros.
Parents who do not ensure that underage pupils regularly attend lessons can also be found guilty of an administrative offense.
Together with the school administration, the public order office and the youth welfare office, we will work with you and your child to find a way to deal with the problem.
If you suspect that your child is not attending school regularly, please contact the school social worker at your child's school as soon as possible.
What to do in case of violence?
Everyone has a right to a life free of violence! Violence can take many forms. It can involve adults among themselves or take place between children or young people. It is particularly serious when violence occurs between adults and children. The first step is to confide in someone. We are here for you at our counseling center. Don't hesitate and get help!
Help, my child has committed a crime!
If your child has committed a crime and you don't know what to do, contact the police advice center in confidence.

Where can my child complete work hours?
Working hours can be completed in any non-profit organization, kindergarten, retirement home or youth club. To ensure that your child is insured, we as the youth welfare service in criminal proceedings (JuHiS) should know about this.
If your child is unable to find a job or has to do a lot of work, the JuHiS colleagues can help you. They will also give assignments for working hours. For example, your child can complete work hours by reading a book including a presentation or by attending a training course.
Does your child also need help with job applications? Your child can earn credit hours for this by receiving appropriate advice from the Pace youth employment service.
Very important: Counseling is voluntary. You decide together with your child who to contact.
The contact person at Jugendhilfe im Strafverfahren is Ms. Mohrmann-Mamczur.

Who do I turn to if I am worried about my child?
Are you worried about your child?
Difficult situations are also part of life and the development of your child's personality. Children and young people test their own limits, but also those of others. Others withdraw and don't socialize, others are very ambitious or can't make friends.
If you have the feeling that things are not running smoothly, you can contact the class teacher or the school social worker. If you wish, the school social worker can, depending on the situation, put you in touch with other support services and advice centers.

What to do if you have problems at school?
If your child has difficulties at school, e.g. with other children, young people or teachers, you can turn to the staff at your school in confidence. This could be, for example
- the class teacher
- the liaison teacher
- the school social worker
You can obtain the contact details of these people from your school office.
You can also contact our counseling center for children, adolescents and parents at any time.
Why are the U examinations important for my child?
Only an experienced pediatrician can assess whether a child's development is "normal". When leaving the maternity clinic, parents are given a yellow child examination booklet. All examination results are entered in this booklet. The examination booklet must be kept carefully and presented to the pediatrician at each check-up.

For children from birth to the age of 18, 11 preventive check-ups are currently covered by all health insurance companies: U1 to U9 are entered in the yellow screening booklet. Some health insurance companies offer additional examinations (U10, U11, J2).
Please keep the yellow examination booklet in your Salzgitter-Sammelmappe (opens in a new tab).

What are good media options for my child?
When making your selection, pay attention to age-appropriate content. The FSK* (films, series) or USK** (video games) is a good help here (large seal with the age rating 0, 6, 12, 16 and no youth rating [from 18]).
However, many media, especially purely digital media (without data carriers), do not have an age rating and are freely and easily accessible on platforms such as YouTube. Research the desired medium on the internet and find out about the content.
As an adult, you are welcome to watch it alone or with your partner and then decide individually whether the content is suitable for your own child.
It also makes sense to experience an age-appropriate program/game together with the child and then decide whether the child is ready for it. You can also discuss the experience with the child.
In addition, the general terms and conditions of the respective websites/apps provide information on the earliest age at which these offers should be used. Sites such as Klicksafe or spieleratgeber-nrw provide good information about various offers.

** USK = Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body

Can my child be driven to school?
Normally, children should walk to school. This is not possible for all children in Salzgitter. However, if the distance from home to school is too far or if your child suffers from an illness, you can apply to the school administration for a ticket to use public transportation. Other solutions are also possible.
