A separation is a major challenge for parents and children. It costs strength, time and nerves and previously everyday things have to be rearranged. This is not always easy. That's why there are a variety of support options in the form of personal advice, online advice, courses, talks and podcasts for parents and children.

Mothers and fathers are entitled to advice on partnership issues as part of youth welfare services if they are responsible for or actually care for a child or young person (Section 17 (1) SGB VIII).

Mothers or fathers who have to care for a child or young person alone or are actually caring for them are also entitled to advice and support (§18 Para. 1 SGB VIII).

The maintenance entitlement of a child who only lives with the parent providing care is regularly calculated using the Düsseldorf table. It is not a statutory instrument, but is used by lawyers, courts and youth welfare offices alike as a recognized basis for calculation.

If an unmarried parent is solely responsible for the care of a child, this caring parent is generally entitled to so-called care maintenance until the child reaches the age of three. Childcare maintenance is generally based on the difference between the mother's income before and after the birth and the father's individual ability to pay. You can obtain advice and support from the child support team.

In order to apply for advance maintenance payments, you must complete the relevant application form and submit it to the maintenance advance office together with some necessary documents. All documents as well as the eligibility requirements can be found on the website of the City of Salzgitter.

It is also not easy for children and young people when their parents separate. That's why we offer a group program for children aged 8 to 12 where they have the opportunity to come to terms with their new life situation and learn that other children feel the same way. Registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis.

We also offer young people the opportunity to take advantage of confidential counseling sessions.

In some family court proceedings, it is agreed with the parents to make use of joint counseling. The Psychological Counseling Center for Children, Adolescents and Parents of the City of Salzgitter offers structured discussions with two counselors, which can make it possible to find joint solutions in the interests of the children.
