The lanes in Albert-Schweizer-Straße were reduced between Konrad-Adenauer-Straße and Joachim-Campe-Straße because the traffic was to be taken out of the city center. Instead, there are now larger areas for pedestrians and cyclists. A key design feature is the wide sidewalks on both sides of the street and spacious recreational areas on the south-west side, which should make new building uses possible. There is a strong desire for restaurants and stores to extend to the outside areas. It is also possible to hold special events and smaller markets here. The private areas in front of the buildings on the south-west side should be included in the redesign in the interests of a uniform overall design. The sidewalks will consist of light-colored concrete block paving and natural stone facing, similar to the first construction phase. Trees will be planted in the autumn to structure the area together with the row of lighting.

The expansion of Albert-Schweitzer-Straße is an important building block in the "City Center Urban Development Framework Plan" adopted by the council. "The new bus station, the city centre development with the new stores, the planned hotel and the new mobility center at the train station planned for the autumn will further enhance the cityscape," emphasizes Michael Tacke.

Residents are also already looking forward to the new bus stops in Kattowitzer Straße/Gesemannstraße, which have been ready since the end of June. In Salzgitter-Bad, work on Burgundenstraße will be completed this month.

The summer vacations will also be used for the bridge work in Salder on the Gänsebleek-Fuhsering and the bridge in Ringelheim: "Many schoolchildren use the bridge in Salder, which is why we want to have this work completed by the end of July," says Torsten Fleige-Lütgering, Head of Civil Engineering and Transport.

The development of the new development area in Lebenstedt (Fredenberg) is also running at full speed. Work on the second construction phase (construction of sewers, pipelines and noise barriers) should be completed by the end of November. 76 building plots will be created here. Marketing is planned from fall 2017. Of the 38 building plots in the first construction phase, 36 have already been sold. The development of the third construction phase with 64 building plots is planned for 2020.
