The budget was approved by the city council on October 24, 2017.
In particular, the approval enables the implementation of the measures to be processed via the Integration Fund of the state of Lower Saxony in 2017. Through the integration fund, the state will grant the city of Salzgitter emergency aid totaling around EUR 10.5 million in 2017 and 2018 to finance refugee-related secondary migration costs.
This financial support from the state for the city's integration work is the successful result of negotiations conducted by Mayor Frank Klingebiel and members of the state parliament Stefan Klein and Marcus Bosse with Minister President Stephan Weil.
At the same time, it is thanks to Klingebiel's emphatic efforts that the city of Salzgitter has received an amount of around €7.3 million for school construction measures for the years 2018 to 2020 through a municipal investment support package II provided by the federal government. The use of these funds has now also been approved by the municipal supervisory authority.
With the approval of the supplementary budget, the transfer of ownership of the Calbecht site of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences to the state can now also take place.
"By taking over ownership of the building, the state is further enhancing the value of the Calbecht site in Lower Saxony's higher education landscape," states Klingebiel, who initiated and played a key role in driving forward the talks regarding the long overdue transfer of ownership.
The supplementary budget statutes will be published on 06.12.17 in the Amtsblatt of the city of Salzgitter.
