The networking meeting took place on May 23 in Salzgitter to share experiences gained during the first funding period and to discuss current challenges and problems. Project coordinators, advisors and administrative staff from all municipalities in Lower Saxony and Bremen participating in EHAP-II were invited.
Dr. Roswitha Krum, the head of the department responsible for children, youth and family, welcomed the participants and explained in her brief introduction to the host city of Salzgitter that it was and is a "city of influx". She went on to address the challenges associated with the influx of Eastern European EU citizens and said: "I am glad that we have a well-functioning network of institutions here that provides numerous contact and advice services. I am very grateful that the EHAP program exists."
One of the topics discussed at the network meeting was the exchange of information on services for the target group of newly arrived EU citizens. The central question was which services have proven successful and which new ones are being planned. It was also about how to deal with self-proclaimed "social advisors" who harm newly arrived people financially and personally with their supposed advice. Against this backdrop, the network is increasingly coming to the conclusion that only increased public relations and educational work by EHAP stakeholders can counteract this sometimes dangerous misinformation. This will also raise awareness of local services and the EHAP network.
Finally, the participants agreed on a new date for the exchange in Bremen in November 2019.
