Salzgitter

Climate protection in elementary school

"I'm taking part in climate protection": this is the title of the climate protection brochure that all third and fourth grade pupils in Salzgitter receive. The little ones learn about climate protection in a playful and varied way.

The original idea came from Reinhard Voges, Wolfenbüttel, who had already initiated the climate protection brochure for primary school pupils in the district of Wolfenbüttel. Michael Szimke from Braunschweig took on the graphic design, accompanied by teacher material from Lutz Wedel from Groß Elbe.

In the 36-page brochure, the main characters Lena and Lukas are out and about in various places in Salzgitter. The two talk about the flooding of the Fuhse or the hailstones in front of Salder Castle. They ask questions about how the weather is created, where energy comes from and why some plants and animals no longer exist. In their search for answers, Lena and Lukas learn about the greenhouse effect and climate change, among other things, and give tips on how to save energy at school or at home. With beautiful pictures relating to Salzgitter and presented in a language suitable for children, primary school pupils learn in a playful way about the different forms of energy and how everyone can help to protect the climate. Part of the brochure is a colorful hidden object picture in which the Salzgitter character Salty is hidden and must first be found by the children...

"The drawings in the brochure have a local reference. That's a unique selling point," said Reinhard Voges, emphasizing that this climate education project is unique in Germany. Lutz Wedel added that this brochure sensitizes primary school pupils to the topics of energy and consumption.

City Councillor Michael Tacke thanked the initiators for the idea and implementation as well as Class 2 of the Ostertal elementary school, Salder branch, school year 2017/2018, for coming up with the names of the two main characters "Lena" and "Lukas".

This brochure was financed by the city of Salzgitter with the support of WEVG. The brochure contains many topics from the core curriculum of the learning plan in Lower Saxony and thus supports local environmental education in many ways.

From now on, the brochure will be distributed every year to all primary school pupils in the third grade. Anyone who would like to take a closer look at climate protection in the classroom or has questions about the brochure can contact the City of Salzgitter's climate protection manager, Jan Holzenbecher (see contact below).

Further information can be found in the teacher material. This is a collection of Internet addresses where you can find out more about the respective topics and retrieve material.
