City of Salzgitter awarded climate protection prize: First climate-conscious municipality in the region

The city of Salzgitter was awarded a special prize for its commitment to climate protection - the Salzgitter Energy Agency and the Regional Energy and Climate Protection Agency (reka) prize for the city of Salzgitter as a climate-conscious municipality.

Mayor Frank Klingebiel was presented with the award by the First Chairman of the Salzgitter Energy Agency, Matthias Brandfass, and the First Chairman of the Regional Energy and Climate Protection Agency (reka), Heiko Hilmer.

"Salzgitter has really earned this award," said Heiko Hilmer, explaining the decision of the two agencies, "we want to give a big thumbs up: you are the first - climate-conscious municipality - in the region to receive an award as part of our program - Climate Protection Fair. Many thanks also on behalf of our children". Salzgitter is the first municipality in the region to have drawn up energy renovation roadmaps for almost all municipal buildings, making it aware of the current situation and how energy consumption and energy costs can be reduced. "Of course, I hope that you will continue," added Hilmer, "and move from a climate-conscious municipality to a climate-neutral municipality as quickly as possible."

Frank Klingebiel expressed his thanks for the award and confirmed: "We are well prepared for the industrial dawn of a climate-friendly age, in which business, science, politics and administration are working hand in hand on hydrogen, battery cells and other topics of the future." This week's demonstration by Salzgitter AG employees in support of the federal government's support for the implementation of green steel production demonstrated this. Climate change can only be tackled with industry. The companies in Salzgitter are role models here, without them this major task could not be accomplished.

He was delighted to receive the award, emphasized Michael Tacke, Head of the City Planning and Environment Department. "With this award, Salzgitter is being seen in the right light for once - not just as a purely industrial city, but as a city that is committed to climate protection and a transformation of industrial processes towards greater sustainability and CO2 neutrality." The start on this path was made a few years ago - incidentally as one of the first municipalities in the region - with the permanent establishment of the position of a municipal climate protection manager.
