Salzgitter

Successful start to training for the new "MedienScoutZ"

At the invitation of the Salzgitter/Peine/Wolfenbüttel police station and the city of Salzgitter, 50 committed participants from four Salzgitter schools took part in the three-day "MedienScoutZ" training course at the city of Salzgitter's youth and education camp on the North Sea island of Neuwerk.

The training of the new "MedienScoutZ" took place at the youth and education camp of the city of Salzgitter on the North Sea island of Neuwerk.

The young people can now pass on their knowledge and media skills to other pupils at their schools.

The Gottfried-Linke-Realschule, the Hauptschule am Fredenberg, the Realschule Salzgitter-Bad and the Gymnasium am Fredenberg took part. Each school provided motivated teachers and school social workers to accompany the project.

Three major topics were on the agenda over the three days, which were taught by Claudia Kramer, chief police inspector at the Salzgitter/Peine/Wolfenbüttel police station, and André Greco, media educator at the municipal children and youth support service of the city of Salzgitter.

The first topic, "Right to one's own image", dealt with personal rights in connection with image and video recordings. This covered current legislation as well as publications on the Internet. One important piece of information was, for example, that photographed persons must be asked for permission before their images can be published online.

Topic number two was the "safe areas" according to Section 201a of the German Criminal Code (StGB) (violation of the most personal sphere of life and personal rights through image recordings). The areas in which personality is protected by law and the areas in which it is forbidden to take photos or videos were explained.

The third and final topic, "cyberbullying", was illustrated using a role play and a simulated chat. The participants were able to understand on an emotional level what a cyberbullying case feels like and then had time to reflect on their own feelings.

The participants were particularly impressed when lawyer Gesa von Schwerin from Law4School joined in via video conference on the last day. She reported anonymously on real cases that she had dealt with and made it clear to the young people that even minors are not protected from punishment. Her descriptions, especially the six-figure penalties in some cases, left a lasting impression.

Between the learning units, there was always time to explore the Neuwerk youth and education camp and the island in the fantastic weather and to relax a little. The camp team treated the group to stick bread and lasagna and found time to chat.

Claudia Kramer and André Greco drew a positive balance: "The training cycle was a complete success. The pupils participated with great commitment. The motivated teachers and school social workers accompanying the project were available as contact persons." Everyone's commitment to making the world a better place, both analog and digital, is impressive. Now the work of the "MedienScoutZ" can begin at the schools.
