Christian Striese, Second Mayor of the city of Salzgitter, conveyed the best wishes of Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the Salzgitter City Council and the administration for a wonderful community project. In May 2024, the new forecourt in front of the elementary school was inaugurated with a small celebration. Almost a year later, he and everyone involved are delighted with the successful new extension. Everyone is invited to actively shape and maintain the garden of actors.
His thanks went to all those involved in the neighborhood who have been involved in a proven manner, such as the local council, the elementary school and its support association, the book lovers, the two family centers, the citizens' association, the Thiede-Steterburg table tennis community, the redevelopment advisory board, the neighborhood management and the committed citizens.
This was also emphasized by Sabine Naats, neighbourhood manager in Steterburg, who thanked everyone involved for their commitment in designing the new "Akteursgarten" and for organizing the party.
After the official inauguration, children and adults discovered the garden's special features: New recreation areas for children and adults; new seating; raised beds with plenty of space for gardening, which have already been planted by the individual groups; berry bushes invite you to snack later; a meadow area with a wildflower island and a water supply via a rainwater storage system fed from the roof of the elementary school are also included.
In short: a diverse and beautiful garden that can be designed by all those involved. The sunshine was a good start to the gardening season for the flowers and plants in the raised beds. The children were delighted with the variety and growth. They will hopefully be able to harvest together in the summer....
Information on the new actor garden:
The garden is around 700 square meters in size and is enclosed by three gates and a fence. In the area in front of it, a small meeting place has been created with seating and a display case where current issues in the neighborhood can be posted.
Special features:
- A curved, paved path leads through the garden, which is illuminated by a bollard light that provides light in addition to the lighting on the adjacent cycle path to the west.
- A "long table" and a circular bench invite you to linger.
- The garden was also equipped with raised beds and level beds and offers space for gardening.
- Part of the lawn area was designed as a flower-herb-climatic lawn (meadow area with wildflower island).
- Berry bushes invite you to snack.
- By using rainwater from the roof of the elementary school, the planting areas can be watered using a permanently installed water pump.
Actors' garden - further information:
The measure of redesigning an actor garden is included in the adaptation of the integrated action plan for the years 2019 to 2021 adopted by the administrative committee on 25.09.2018 and has now been implemented in connection with the redesign of the public square in front of the elementary school.
- The climate protection measures required in urban development funding since 2020 for this individual measure are the networking of green and open spaces, increasing the degree of unsealing and improving the microclimate in the immediate residential environment.
- The aim of the garden project, which is both a structural and a social project, is to strengthen togetherness in the neighborhood through communal gardening and to connect various stakeholders in the neighborhood.
The garden is intended to facilitate participation and thus strengthen social contacts in Steterburg.
In a participation phase, the interests of residents and stakeholders were collected and measures developed. Particular attention was paid to the youngest residents, who should be introduced to nature at nursery and school age.
Following the participation phase and the formation of a "garden group", the design plans for the garden were drawn up. - About the garden group: It is made up of representatives from institutions (school, family centers, Bürgerverein e.V., Bücherfreunde e.V.) as well as committed citizens of Steterburg. In principle, the garden group is open to everyone. The citizens' association is responsible.
- The actors' garden will be accessible on foot from Klosterweg and also from the newly designed primary school forecourt.
- Construction was carried out from fall 2024 to the end of 2024.
- The future pedestrian access to the Akteursgarten will be barrier-free from Klosterweg and also from the newly designed primary school forecourt.
