Salzgitter

Disaster control exercise of the Hanover helicopter squadron

Last Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22, the Hanover helicopter squadron held an exercise in Salzgitter.

Overall, the fire department and police drew a positive conclusion from the exercise days and gained many important insights.

The aim of the exercise was to work together with one of the four newly procured roll-off containers for vegetation fires, which are distributed throughout the state of Lower Saxony.

A helicopter from the state police in Hanover and a helicopter from KMN Koopmann GmbH in Salzgitter-Lesse were used on both days. At the beginning, a mobile collapsible container with a capacity of 36,000 liters was filled by two swap body vehicles. Later, the helicopters removed water from this container using so-called Bambi buckets. In addition to this method, filling via a hose line and drawing water from the nearby Salzgittersee was also practiced.

The Lesse local fire department, which also provides the operating personnel for the roll-off container and the ground personnel for filling in the event of an emergency, was responsible for setting up and supervising the filling station. The simulated fire site was located in a field between Lesse and Reppner.

As several helicopters are usually deployed at the same time for large forest fires, the Koopmann company was involved in the exercise in order to rehearse realistic coordination in the airspace. The company is contracted by the state of Lower Saxony and can also be requested in the event of forest fires.

On both days, the Lebenstedt local fire department and the Information and Communication Service specialist group were responsible for technical operations management. Catering was provided by the specialist catering unit of the Salzgitter volunteer fire department. The DLRG secured the Salzgittersee area so that the helicopters could safely take water from the Salzgittersee.

On Friday, the exercise was attended by the First City Councillor and Head of the Fire Department Eric Neiseke, as well as members of the Fire Service and Public Order Committee.

Neiseke was very pleased with the precision with which the various organizations worked together. Eric Neiseke and all the committee members present expressed their thanks to all the volunteers involved in civil protection. A special thank you goes to the Salzgitter-Lesse local fire department for the not insignificant part they played in organizing the exercise. "The entire volunteer service of the city of Salzgitter has once again shown that you can always rely on them in an emergency!" said Neiseke.
