Play and exercise for all generations

A new place for all generations: The "Unter den Eichen" playground in Steterburg will be renovated and embellished in many ways over the next few months. The children from the St. Bernward family center and the daycare center on Brotweg brought their own little spades to the ground-breaking ceremony to help...

Ground-breaking ceremony for a new playground in Steterburg: those involved and local residents are delighted.

Neighborhood manager Sabine Naats also welcomed the representatives of the council, the local council, the redevelopment advisory board and Christian Striese, mayor of Nordost and second mayor of the city of Salzgitter. He conveyed the best wishes of the council and administration as well as Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel. "We are delighted that the new Unter den Eichen playground is getting underway," emphasized Christian Striese and looked back on the beginnings and the initiative of the Stiftsmäuse. The Second Mayor explained that a lot had happened in Steterburg and that several construction measures would follow over the next two years, for which an information event had already been held.

In addition to the new playground, the St. Bernward parish forecourt at the Pappeldamm/Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße junction will be redesigned, as will the Schulring/Unter den Eichen junction.

Christian Striese thanked everyone involved for their support and asked for their understanding for the restrictions associated with the construction work. The playground will probably be closed until the end of February (see below), but everyone can look forward to spring.

This was also emphasized by city planning officer Michael Tacke. He made it clear that there had been a participation process for the new playground in order to find out about the need for a second larger playground. The new Unter den Eichen playground had been designed as a place for all generations with various multifunctional options. After the Salzgitter City Council approved this project, the plans for a playground for all generations followed. Thanks to urban development funding, the project, which cost around 250,000 euros, will receive two-thirds funding from the state of Lower Saxony and the federal government.

Marieke Röhlen, an employee in the Urban Redevelopment and Socially Integrative City department and project manager, presented the details of the new playground with a variety of play and exercise elements. The special feature: There will be a roller track, a picnic bench, mud corner and much more (see below) The existing trees will remain and be added to.

The children listened intently and took their little spades to help Oliver Tersch, Managing Director of Keller Tersch Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau.

But since Monday, November 17, the professionals have taken over... The children can then go by regularly to check on the work...

The "Unter den Eichen" playground will be a meeting place for all generations.

Information:

Construction work began on Monday, November 17, and will last until around the end of February. Changes are possible due to weather conditions.

An inauguration is planned with all interested parties and players in the spring. Then the new playground can be tested by children and adults at higher temperatures...

What is necessary for the construction of the new playground?

  • The closure of the "old" playground.
  • In addition, the sidewalk and parking lanes along the playground must be closed to construction vehicles.
  • Traffic signs will be put up to show the (detour) route.

What can children and adults look forward to?

  • The "Unter den Eichen" playground will be a beautiful new place for all generations with a variety of play, sports and recreation areas:
  • The existing trees have been integrated into the planning design.
  • Many exercise elements such as climbing stones, nest swing, sand play with mud table
  • A special feature of the "Unter den Eichen" playground will be the roller track, which sets it apart from the existing play areas. It will be made of asphalt with small bumps and can be used by all age groups. The rolling play area is a low-threshold rolling area specially designed to meet the needs of young children. The asphalted circuit can be used with various rolling devices, such as balance bikes, scooters or scooters, but also with rollators and wheelchairs. Until now, there has been a general lack of suitable spaces for children to roll freely and safely.
  • Picnic bench and chill-out area
  • Various seating options for all generations
  • The existing planting to the directly adjacent neighboring properties will be supplemented with additional shrubs.
  • The original path connection in the direction of Hagenholz has been moved further south to protect the existing group of trees.
  • The southern area is also characterized by the existing trees. Beneath them is a grassy area that is ideal for playing soccer or having a picnic.
  • Edible berry bushes will be planted between the pathway and the taxiway.
  • The seating options take into account the different needs of the users. Seating elements near the play elements for supervising children at play or the bench at the edge of the playground area, which can be used for lingering, for example, are part of the equipment.
  • A combination of table and benches will be set up in the shade of the southern area to invite children to linger together. A seating element is planned in the center, which clearly stands out from the other seating elements thanks to its striking color and design language and creates an appealing place to get together under the canopy of the existing group of trees.
