They will take place from June 15 to July 5. The CITY CYCLING website www.stadtradeln.de/salzgitter (opens in a new tab) is now open for registration. All citizens can take part in this city cycling competition and cycle as many kilometers as possible for their city.
The organizers for the urban area are the Salzgitter Economic and Innovation Promotion Agency (WIS) and the City of Salzgitter. The "Climate Alliance" organizes the entire international cycling competition. Organized every year, local politicians and citizens worldwide pedal for more climate protection and cycling in the alliance's worldwide CITY CYCLING competition.
How can you take part in CITY CYCLING or SCHOOL CYCLING?
The principle is simple: after a short registration on the website www.stadtradeln.de/salzgitter (opens in a new tab) or via the CITY CYCLING app www.stadtradeln.de/app (opens in a new tab), all participants are called upon to cover as many everyday journeys as possible by bike and leave the car behind. The aim is to cover as many kilometers as possible. You can start collecting kilometers at any time, even after the start of the cycling event.
Anyone can form a team (of two or more people) or join one to take part in the competition for Salzgitter. The inclusion and participation of all people is very important to the organizers, which is why the journeys and kilometers covered by wheelchair or handbike can also be entered on the website or the CITY CYCLING APP. Walking bikes are also permitted.
What kind of teams can be formed?
Participants can take part in self-formed teams of at least two active cyclists or in one of the seven local teams. Here, participants have the opportunity to cycle as many kilometers as possible for their locality (north, northeast, northwest, east, south, southeast and west) as a sub-team for their own district. In the end, the total kilometers count both for your own district and for the village. This is particularly interesting for those who would like to participate on their own and are looking for a group to collect their kilometers for.
In addition to the most bicycle-active local team, prizes are also awarded to the most bicycle-active job team (company, administration, public authority, vocational school, Ostfalia University, other professional groups) and the most bicycle-active leisure team (families, clubs, associations, political parties and other private groups).
SCHOOL CYCLING category
The "SCHOOL CYCLING" category is an independent competition within "CITY CYCLING". It is about the titles of the "most bicycle-active school" with the most kilometers per active team member and the "school with the most total kilometers". In addition, the pupils with the most kilometers will be awarded.

How can I find attractive cycle routes in the city?
Daniela Happ from the organization team explains how to find the most beautiful cycle routes in Salzgitter: "On the one hand, we offer many hiking and cycling maps in our tourist office in Salzgitter-Bad, and there is also a cycling tour book 'Nördliches Harzvorland', which also contains many attractive routes in the Salzgitter area." On the STADTRADELN website for Salzgitter www.stadtradeln.de/salzgitter (opens in a new tab) there are also regular tips on which events in Salzgitter can be combined with a bike tour. Dates for guided cycle tours offered by the ADFC Salzgitter and the Harzklub Zweigverein Salzgitter can also be found there.
What is CITY CYCLING actually?
CITY CYCLING is an international campaign of the Climate Alliance. The international competition invites all members of local parliaments to pedal as role models for climate protection and to campaign for increased promotion of cycling. In teams with citizens, they should collect as many bicycle kilometers as possible for their municipality. The campaign aims to raise citizens' awareness of cycling in everyday life and bring the topics of bicycle use and bicycle traffic planning more strongly into local parliaments.
Since 2017, cities, municipalities and districts outside Germany have also been able to take part in the campaign on 21 consecutive days between May and September. There are awards and high-quality prizes to be won - but above all a liveable environment with less traffic congestion, fewer exhaust fumes and less noise.
What is the Climate Alliance?
For more than 25 years, the member municipalities of the Climate Alliance have been working with their indigenous partners in the rainforests to protect the global climate.
With around 1,700 members in over 25 countries, the Climate Alliance is the world's largest city network dedicated to climate protection and the only one to set concrete targets: Each Climate Alliance municipality has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by ten percent every five years. As the lifestyles of people living in the northern hemisphere have a direct impact on particularly endangered peoples and places, the Climate Alliance combines local action with global responsibility.
